Simon Stafiniak
Simon "Si" Stafiniak, 93, of Hometown, entered into eternal rest on Monday, March 23, 2015 in the St. Luke's Geriatric Center, Miners Campus, Coaldale. He was the husband of Martha (Adamowicz) Stafiniak. They celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary in May of last year.
He was a machinist for the former Bundy Tubing Co., Hometown, until retiring in 1980.
Born in Lansford, he was a son of the late Herasim and Eva (Chocholak) Stafiniak.
A graduate of the former Coaldale High School, he was an Army veteran of World War II, having served with the 1782nd Ordnance Supply and Maintenance Company in Normandy and Northern France.
The deceased was a member of St. Mary Russian Orthodox Church, Coaldale, where he sang in the choir and was a past council member and cantor.
He was also a member of the Coaldale Fire Company and the Coaldale Russian Citizens Club, and, for many years, was an active member of the Mahanoy City/Tamaqua Chapter of the Coal Cracker Chorus.
Surviving in addition to his widow are a daughter, Nadine Fegley of Ephrata; two sons, Thomas J. and Paul, both of Philadelphia; a sister Helen, wife of Paul Sheers of Coaldale; two grandchildren, Josiah S. and Katherine O. Fegley; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Ann Slanta; and three brothers John, Steve and Michael.
Service: Funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28, St. Mary Russian Orthodox Church, Coaldale, with the Rev. Ignatius Gauvain officiating. Military graveside service, parish cemetery, Summit Hill. Call 7:30-9 p.m. Friday and 10-11 a.m. Saturday in the church. Panachida service 5 p.m. Friday, followed by a Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts Service at 6 o'clock. Contributions in his name may be made to the church, 217 First St., Coaldale, PA 18218. Arrangements by Sverchek-Blazosky Funeral Home, Lansford.
