Mrs. Joan Ellen (Benyo) Frendak

Mrs. Joan Ellen Frendak, 79, passed away peacefully with loved ones by her side at the St. Luke's Hospice Center, Bethlehem, on Saturday, Jan. 3. She was the wife of Michael Frendak. They celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary this past year.

Born in Coaldale, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Mary (Zulic) Benyo.

She resided in Lansford from 1964-2014 and spent her last year in Quakertown.

She worked in the garment industry in the area for 35 years until retiring.

Joan Ellen was an active member of the former St. Michael Catholic Church, Lansford, having served as president of the PTA. She actively coordinated fundraising efforts throughout the parish and community.

The deceased was an officer of the Coaldale V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and long served as secretary/ treasurer of Branch 156 for the Ladies Pennsylvania Slovak Catholic Union.

She was a 1952 graduate of the former Coaldale High School.

She was a member of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Lansford.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Michael, and his wife, Trisha, of Warrington, and Edward, and his wife, Donna, of Reading and Lake Hauto; a daughter, Judith Ann, wife of Dean Miller of Quakertown; a sister Nancy, wife of Nicholas King of Coaldale; five grandchildren, Ali, Jaclyn, Michael, Nicholas and Giuliann; and nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Michael and Andrew; and a sister, MaryAnn Bohush.

Service: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church, 124 E. Abbott Street, Lansford, with Msgr. Thomas Derzack officiating. Interment, Sky-View Memorial Park, Hometown. Call 10-11 a.m. Thursday in the church. Arrangements by Sverchek-Blazosky Funeral Home, Powell and East Bertsch streets, Lansford.
