John (Jack) Gbur, Sr., 81, of Downingtown, died January 30, 2009 at home.
He was the husband of Janet Ann Gbur (Sciarretta), with whom he shared 56 years of marriage. Born in Coaldale, Pa. he was the son of the late Basil and Mary Sova Gbur. He graduated from Coaldale High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was employed by the Pennsylvania Turnpike for eight years and was a Power and Water Supervisor for the boiler house at the Downingtown Paper Company and retired after 41 years of service.
He was an original member of the Coaldale Victory Band. He was an active member and sang in the choir at the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Coatesville, Pa. He taught Sunday school for 24 years and held trustee and auditor positions in prior years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons John Gbur, Jr. of Downingtown, and Steve Gbur of Houston, Texas, two daughters, Susan, wife of Carl Fessenbecker of Honey Brook, and Janet, wife of Anthony Flocco of Coatesville and four grandchildren. He was the loving brother of the late Stephen Gbur of Bethlehem.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 3rd at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 392 Charles Street, Coatesville, Pa.
Friends may call at the Ralston and Bredickas Funeral Home, 107 W. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown from 6:00 8:00 p.m. on Monday, Feb 2nd with a panahyda (prayer service) at 8:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, Feb. 3rd, friends may call at the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Coatesville from 9:30 11:00 a.m. Liturgy will be at 11:00 a.m. and the interment will be at the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Ghost Orthodox Church.
