COALDALE VETERANS MEMORIAL GARDEN

The Coaldale Veterans Memorial Garden contains memorials to those from Coaldale who have fought in our Country’s wars. The memorial was started in the early 1920’s when a large stone column was erected with the names of those who had served in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and in World War I. In the 1960’s two additional granite columns honored those who died in WW II and those who served in Vietnam.

In 2005, three veterans began the research necessary to determine who had served, and who had given the ultimate sacrifice in WW II. In 2006, a WW II Memorial Wall was dedicated. It consists of 15 granite columns containing the names of 1.346 men and women who served. In 2007, a mural of the flag raising atop Mount Surabachi on Iwo Jima was dedicated. In 2008, three granite columns were dedicated which honor those who served in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and in “Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom.”

A Women’s Memorial Garden will be completed in 2009. It will consist of a mural depicting nurses attending to a wounded soldier, and a wishing well which will honor all women. The WW II Memorial Wall and Iwo Jima Mural, and the Korean War, Vietnam War and the “Iraqi Freedom/Enduring Freedom” columns represent the completion of Phases I and II of the Coaldale Veterans Memorial Garden

The garden has benches lighting, and artfully laid out sidewalks with memorial and honor inscribed bricks. It is completely fenced and secure. Adequate lighting, security patrols, and security cameras permit visitors to attend the garden during daylight or evening hours. We encourage you to pay your respects and to relax and reminisce in this beautiful setting.

The WW II Memorial Wall contains the names of 1,346 men and women from Coaldale who served in WW II. Fifty three gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. The Iwo Jima mural represents the symbol of the contribution of those who served in WW II to our freedom today.

Phase III is now underway. This is the construction of the Women’s Memorial Garden. The garden will contain a mural of two nurses attending to a wounded soldier. This mural is a copy of the statue located at the Vietnam Women’s Memorial in Washington, DC.

A memorial to all women will be constructed. This “Memorial to Women” will be in the form of a wishing well. The memorial will have eight black granite images depicting the role of women in the development of and defense of our country.

The Women’s Memorial Garden will be dedicated at Memorial Day services in May of 2009.

The “SS Coaldale Victory” was launched in February of 1945. By March it was underway to Le Havre, France with supplies for Patton’s Third Army. At least nine men from Coaldale served under Patton, and two gave the ultimate sacrifice. A representation of the ship drawn by William Gaddes was laser engraved upon a 20 by 24 inch black granite surface. It is located adjacent to the Iwo Jima mural.

Shown is one of the six unique 18 inch black granite disks representing our four military services, the Coast Guard, and the WW II Merchant Marine.

The flagpole at the former Coaldale High School.

This flagpole and base are structurally sound. It will be painted and the flag lines installed by the Coaldale Fire Company in the Spring of 2009. The base will be restored, as will the surrounding sidewalk. It will be lighted.

You may help with the restoration, which will cost $3,000.00. We already have a nylon flag that is approx. 14 by 18 feet. It will be a glorious sight to see the Star Spangled Banner waving above Coaldale.

Please visit the Coaldale Veterans Memorial Garden and the Women’s Memorial Garden. It is a wonderful place to relax and reminisce about family members and friends who have served, are serving, or those who have loved, waited, and prayed for their loved one’s safe return . An old Russian proverb states “ Only you and I know your love has saved me.” (From certain death in combat).

God Bless all those who have served our nation; especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedom.

The Veterans Memorial Garden is located adjacent to the Coaldale Borough Hall, Phillips and Third Streets, Coaldale, PA 18218.
