Frank D. Herron


Frank Daniel Herron, 66 of Naples, Fla., formerly of Reading, died Friday. He was the husband of Verna I. (Fichthorn) Herron. They observed their 15th wedding anniversary last July 7.

He was a high school principal in the Wilson School District, West Lawn, before retiring in 1997. In the spring of 2001, he was vice president and senior consultant of Sacred Heart Academy. Previously, he was a principal at Southern Middle School, Reading, 1987-93; acting assistant to the superintendent in Reading in 1990; vice principal at Southern Junior High School, 1979-1987; and principal of Northeast, 1978-1979.

Born in Coaldale, he was a son of the late John J. and Grace T. (Shovelin) Herron, and a foster son of the late Walter and Lucreatia Evans.

He was a 1956 graduate of Coaldale High School and graduated in 1964 from Kutztown University with a bachelor of science degree in education, with a major in biology and general science. He received a master's degree in education in 1968 from Temple University in 1968, his principal certification in 1976 from Lehigh University, and a master's degree in education administration from Weidner University.

Herron was the fair director of the Reading-Berks Science and Engineering Fair and was inducted into the Southern Middle School Hall of Fame.

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Naples, and a former member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Spring Township.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a brother, John F., and his wife, Katherine D., of Bethlehem; a sister, Ann T. Cannon of Allentown; and nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Grace Marie Brimmer.

The John F. Herron Funeral Home, 458 Center St. (at Market St.), Bethlehem, is in charge of the arrangements.
