COALDALE VETERANS HONOR TRANSITION FROM 1947 TO PRESENT DAY

In 1947, the Coaldale American Legion Post 170 led an effort to
honor those who served in WW II. They erected a large wooden monument called
a "Victory Board". It was located between the First National Bank and the
borough hall. The names of the veterans were painted on white slats, while
those who lost their lives were painted in gold on black slats. There
appears to be approximately 900 names listed, with about 25 names on black
slats. The board was constructed of donated lumber and paint, and cost about
$130.00. The monument deteriorated, and was removed sometime in the late
1950's.

COALDALE TRANSITIONS FROM 1947 WOODEN "VICTORY BOARD" TO A WW II
MEMORIAL WALL OF 15 GRANITE COLUMNS CONTAINING 1,346 NAMES

In 2005, a group of veterans began an effort to honor those who
served in WW II, and to especially honor those who gave the ultimate
sacrifice. From examination of the board, it was apparent that a large
number of Coaldale's population had served in WW II. Detailed research over
one year resulted in the identification of more than 1,300 men and women.
The ultimate sacrifice was paid by 51 of Coaldale's finest. The present day
memorial consists of 15 granite columns, upon which are inscribed the names
of 1,346 men and women. More than fifty women served, mostly in the capacity
of nurses. A large mural depicting the raising of the American flag above
Mount Surabachi during the combat which claimed 7,00 American lives, is
dedicated to the "Honor of All Those Who Served".

The Coaldale Veterans Memorial is now in Phase II, which includes
the erection of granite columns to honor those who served in the Korean and
Vietnam Wars, and those who served in "Desert Storm", "Iraqi Freedom", and
those who are currently serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the War on
Terrorism. Phase II will include a "Memorial to Women", not only those who
served, but those who loved and waited, and those who lost loved ones. The
memorial will be in the form of a wishing well with images on black granite
showing the contributions of women over the history of our country. For
information regarding how you might honor a loved one, contact Bill Gaddes
