Charles Herring -- 1924 - 2016 Obituary

Charles "Banty" Herring, 92, of Oak Drive, Lake Hauto, Nesquehoning, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, March 14, 2016, surrounded by loved ones while in the care of his beloved wife of 65 years, Blanche L. (Marino)

A 1943 Coaldale High School graduate, Charles served honorably in the United States Marines during World War II.

He maintained his reverence of his military time as a life member of the Marine Corp League. Many referred to Charles fondly as "The Marine."

Charles was a member of the First Congregational Church of Coaldale; Coaldale V.F.W. Post No. 6982; and Coaldale American Legion Post No. 170. He was a member of the Tamaqua Elks, and pursued his passion of golf as a longtime member of the former Mahoning Valley Country Club of Lehighton.

Charles was an avid football fan having traveled to many games with friends, and enjoyed wintering at their home in Florida. Returning home after serving his country, Charles worked as an electrician at the No. 9 Mines of Coaldale, and then for Rockwell Corporation of Reading, from which he retired.

Born Thursday, Feb. 14, 1924 in Coaldale, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Marion (Richards) Herring.

He was predeceased by a son, Charles R Herring; and a sister, Emma Lou Scheitrum. Surviving Charles, is his dear niece, Mary Frances (Chamberlain) Migiorino and her husband Robert; and many nieces and nephews.

Service: Funeral services at 11 a.m. on Thursday March 17, 2016 in the First Congregational Church, 123 E. Ruddle St., Coaldale, with the Rev. Dr. Wayne Benack officiating.

Interment, with military honors, will be held at Skyview Memorial Park, Hometown. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until time of services in the church. Memorials in his name may be made to the church. The E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 655 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of arrangements.
