Obituary:Nicholas Maholick. Alumna: CHS Class of 1949

Nicholas Maholick, 87, of Coaldale, died on Monday, Dec. 31, 2018 in Pottsville.

Born on Sept. 23, 1931 in Coaldale, he was a son of the late Dimitri and Efrosia

(Prokopchak) Maholick.

A 1949 graduate of the former Coaldale High School, Nicholas served as a corporal

in the Army during the Korean War, where he earned the National Defense Service

\Medal and the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star.

Prior to his service in the Army, he worked for the Pennsylvania Department of

Highways. After his military service, Nicholas worked for US Steel at their

Fairless Hills Plant, retiring in 1987.

He was a lifelong member of St. Mary Russian Orthodox Church, Coaldale; a member

of the Coaldale Legion; and a member of the Russian Club.

Several nephews and nieces survive, including Ronald Gurka of Arlington, Virginia;

Nancy Crabtree of Kansas City, Missouri; Paula Solsberg of Blue Springs, Missouri;

David Kruczek and Robert Kruczek, both of Barnegat, New Jersey.

The last member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by: brothers, Michael,

Alex, John, Peter, Anthony, and Joseph; and sisters, Helen, Mary Horoshak, Anna

(Kruczek) Gurka, Olga Dubiel, Pauline Maholick, Alice (Antonia) Gurka.

Services: 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 5, St. Mary Russian Orthodox Church, First and

Phillips streets, Coaldale, with The Very Rev. James P. Weremedic officiating.

Interment, with military honors, in St. Mary Russian Orthodox Cemetery, Summit Hill.

Call 6-8 p.m. Friday and 9-10 a.m. Saturday, in the church. Parastas will be held at

7:30 p.m. Friday in the church. Memorials may be made in Nicholas's name to St. Mary

Russian Orthodox Cemetery Fund, c/o Gloria Bench, 37 Bench Lane, Lehighton, PA 18235.
