Author Patrick Campbell, a great-nephew of Alexander Campbell who was hanged more than a century ago during the reign of the Molly Maguires, plans to return to Carbon County.

He will be the keynote speaker for the 47th annual banquet of the Panther Valley Irish-American Association in Lansford scheduled March 17 -- St. Patrick's Day -- in the AmVets Post 83.

Campbell is the marketing communications manager at the World Trade Center in New York City.

Patrick Campbell penned "A Molly Maguire Story," a 1992 book which relates that his great uncle was unjustly hanged in 1877 in the Carbon County Jail for the murder of John P. Jones, a Lansford mine supervisor.

Alexander Campbell was 43 when he was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder. Campbell was one of four members of the Molly Maguires sent to the gallows for killing Jones.

Patrick Campbell visited Carbon County in December for a modern-day mock trial of his great-uncle as part of the county's Sesquicentennial celebration.

In the re-trial conducted under contemporary rules of legal procedure, Alexander Campbell was acquitted by a jury.

The speaker for this year's Shamrock Day was born in Dungloe, Ireland but is a U.S. citizen because his parents were naturalized Americans. The family of five settled in Bayonne, N.J., and Patrick Campbell earned a master's degree in English from Rutgers University.

He wrote another book, "Memories of Dungloe," in 1993, and is working on a third, "Death in Templecrone," which is based on the Irish famine of 1845-50.

He is also a journalist for the Irish Echo, a New York publication.

Patrick Campbell and his wife, formerly Eileen Sweeney, have a daughter, Nora, 16.

The program for the St. Patrick's Day banquet includes a social hour from 6 to 7 p.m. The highlight of the evening is the presentation of the Shamrock Award.

William McGinley of Jim Thorpe, who is clerk of courts for the county, is president of the Irish-American Association. He leads the committee that will announce the Shamrock Award winner in the near future.

Other committee members are Emmett McCall of Lansford; John Barry, Nesquehoning; Robert Crampsie of Summit Hill, who is county controller; Robert Ames of Coaldale and William Kennedy of Tamaqua.

Other association officers are Michael McCall, Coaldale, first vice president; Joseph Sweeney, Coaldale, second vice president; Crampsie, secretary; Ames, treasurer; Barry, sergeant-at-arms; and Rev. James Ward, pastor of St. Joseph and St. Stanislaus Catholic churches in Summit Hill, chaplain.

Serving on the committee responsible for bringing Patrick Campbell back to Carbon County are Crampsie, McGinley, Joseph Conahan of Coaldale and state Rep. Keith McCall, D-122nd District, of Summit Hill.
