Gold Seals Bow to Coaldale

Reading's strong Gold Seal football eleven ran against a Tartar in its game at George Field on Friday afternoon when the Coaldale moleskin representatives from the coal regions swamped the local gridders by a score of 36 to 0.

Coaldale boasts of having one of the greatest professional clubs in the country and gave good evidence of its strength against the Readingites.

The Gold Seals played mostly a defensive game and managed to hold the anthracite gang scoreless in the third period and four downs on three different occasions.

Coaldale won the toss, Captain Book electing to defend the north goal. Kingsley kicked off to Hartwig on the 15-yard line. On a play off tackle Curley Christian, the former Reading High star, gained 10 yards. Two end runs failed, and Gold Seal lost the ball on a fumble.

VISITORS PENALIZED

The green-jerseyed eleven were penalized for off-side and after repeated attempts to buck the line, Coaldale was held for downs. Kingsley immediately punted, booting the ball to Coaldale’s 20-yard line where Captain Book caught the pigskin, but was thrown heavily by Selig before he could move. Charles Giltner punted to Gold Seal’s 30-yard line, and the latter after failing to gain on end run and attempted forward which grounded. Kingsley was called on to punt, but being hurried the Coaldale ends broke through and the kick was blocked.


It was at this stage that Blue Bonner, the idol of the Panther Creek Valley, was sent into the game, replacing Lewcheck. The Gold Seal line, although battered hard, held like a stonewall, and again succeeded in holding Manager Gildea’s pets for downs on Reading’s six-yard line. Two line plunges failed to gain but Monk Doremus made seven yards, when the ball was lost on a fumble.


FIRST TOUCHDOWN

On a criss-cross play, Garland to Stanley Giltner, with the entire local squad being drawn to the right, Stan Giltner went around left end scoring a touchdown after 9 minutes, 40 seconds of play. Gildea registered the additional point after touchdown by sending the ball between the uprights.

SECOND PERIOD


With the ball on the locals’ 20-yard line, Kingsley was called on to punt. Again being hurried the elongated fullback got his kick off badly, and the punt was blocked. Melley recovering the ball went over the line for the second touchdown, but Bonner failed to add the extra point as his drop kick went wide of the goal posts.


A seiried of line plunges resulted in Captain Broock going over the line for the third touchdown. Gildea’s kick being low in the attempt for the extra point. Prior to the close of the period, Gildea kicked a field goal from the 37-yard line. The half ended 22 to 0.
