William D. Smith, 72, of Forked River, Lacey, died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Van Dyke Hospice at Community Medical Center, Toms River. Born in Coaldale, Pa., he resided in Toms River before moving to Forked River. He was an administrator for Toms River Regional Schools, and was a professor at Monmouth College, Georgian Court College, and Ocean County College. He was also a member of the Lacey United Methodist Church, Forked River and a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Smith was a poet and author, and enjoyed running marathons.

He is survived by his wife, Maryann Smith; and his children, Patricia Gonzalez of Bayville, Lori Hill of Bayville, and Billy Smith of Seaside Park. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Robert Osenenko of Hammonton, James Osenenko of West Creek, and John Osenenko of Alpheretta, Ga. He is also survived by nine loving grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 18 at the Lacey United Methodist Church, Lacey Road, Forked River. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society, would be appreciated.
