LaVerne McLean (Kleckner), 88, of Newark, Del., died Tuesday, July 4, in her home.

She taught in Coaldale and Tamaqua schools before moving to Newark in 1959, where she was a French teacher in the Newark School District until retiring in 1980.

Born in Coaldale, she was a daughter of the late James and Bertha (Kleppinger) McLean.

She was a 1935 graduate of the former Coaldale High School and received a bachelor of education degree from Kutztown State Teachers College and a master's degree in 1966 from the University of Delaware.

Surviving are two daughters, Loretta K. Fuller and Diane M. Kleckner, both of Newark; two granddaughters; and nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Alma Berger and Zelda Shellhamer; and two brothers, James and Daniel.

The Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, Del., is in charge of the arrangements.
