myapplet16. This is a photo of the Ritz Theater, Coaldale's predecessor to the Angela, as it stood on Second Street above the intersection with Ruddle Street. At 1:30 a.m. on December 26, 1948, the Ritz was destroyed by fire. Firemen from Coaldale, Lansford, Summit Hill and Tamaqua fought the blaze for three hours. When the fire was finally extinguished, only the front wall of the theater, which opened on Oct. 13, 1933 and was remodeled just six months before the fire, was left standing. Elvis Presley never had the chance to perform at the Ritz before it burned, but in honor of the upcoming 72nd anniversary of Elvis’ birth on January 8, 1935, here is how his show at the Ritz might have looked and sounded:

Hint: He was co-captain of the 1962 undefeated, untied Coaldale Tigers football squad and co-captain of the 1967 Lehigh University football team. During his four-year football career at Lehigh University, he started every game as either a Tight End or Split End, one year on the Freshman team and three years on the varsity squad. He established three Lehigh pass-catching records: most passes caught in one game (13 against Rutgers University), most passes caught in one year (58 in 1966), and most passes caught in a career (132 in three seasons). The 58 passes he caught in 1966 ranked 1st in the East and 7th nation-wide. Following his senior season, 1967, he was named as a first team Split End on the All-Middle Atlantic Conference team, he was chosen as a member of the prestigious NCAA All-American Academic Team, and he was selected to represent Lehigh University as the Lehigh Valley Scholar-Athlete at the 1968 National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame.

Hints: The young woman’s father was a well-respected teacher who excelled in teaching English and languages at CHS. She graduated from CHS in 1964. The young man, shortly after graduation, joined the Navy and lived in England where he still resides. His late, younger brother was a co-captain of the 1963 Coaldale Tigers football team.
